"They have the standard outfit : shapeless jeans, checked shirts, bushy hair.  The bassist wears a T-shirt in praise of Spillers Records shop in Cardiff, self-declared ”the world’s oldest record shop” (since 1894).  However their music is far from standard: an indefinable hybrid between grunge, cold-wave and math-rock, constantly oscillating between heavy flights and long mysterious interludes.  Above that Heddwyn, their lead singer, plays viola, but uses it in a way that’s anything but celtic. He plugs it in an effect pedal and inflicts all kinds of distorsions on it. While [local support band] Divine Pilot played guitar using a bow earlier, here it is the viola that is used as an electric guitar.  The result is… intriguing.  The first song James Lemain ends with a primal scream by the drummer Huw, and applause doesn't spontaneously errupt.  During the whole concert an attentive atmosphere remains, so much so that Heddwyn has to ask people to move closer to the stage.

 

The bold Parisians who made the move (or who came despite the cold weather) are now in front of a band in constant shift, as elusive as a piece of soap that slips each time you think you have it. To such an extent that when guitarist Andrew invites people to “dance” or “clap their hands”, nobody complies, thinking it’s a joke.  You can feel a gap between the band and the audience, especially when they start to play songs in welsh.  Unexpectedly, it’s at this moment that their music reaches it's full potential.  When matched with these guttural sounds from ancient ages, the broken landscapes of Threatmantics make sense.  If they’re self-derisive about it (“It’s the worst language in the world!”), tonight it’s in this language that Threatmantics communicate best with their public.

 

The setlist is well balanced between their first album (Upbeat Love, 2008) and the new one, yet to come.  At the last minute, they decide to add the song Esgyrn ("bones" in welsh) which they admit is not really ready yet.  Then they continue with Don’t Care, but won’t play Big Man.  After eleven songs, they decide to stop the experiment.  There is still a song on the setlist, White Otello, but it will not be performed.  The Welsh lay down their arms.

 

After the show, the band was to DJ but the venue emptied all of a sudden.  The bravery of the audience not up to waiting for a hypothetical night bus in temperatures of -10°C. Threatmantics fought well, but Paris failed to respond."

Our first gig of 2012 is our first in a while outside the British isles.
We play L'International club, Paris on February 12th.

Having played there recently with TVEGC I'm really excited about returning with Threatmantics.
It's pretty much tailor made for us!

It's also free entry, so if anyone is over for the France/Ireland Six Nations game and want somewhere to party Sunday night, you know where to go!

The show starts at 8pm and is part of C2, Radio Cymru's more alternative, music orientated series of programs.

Over the next few weeks we'll be releasing several more tracks over other radio shows in a long winded build up to the eventual release of said album.

This is extremely disapointing for us as we were really looking forward to meeting up with them again, having toured with them in the past.
